Background

I never planned to become a financial planner. The 2008 financial crisis changed my mind.

After graduating from Calvin College, I taught high school English for six years. In 2008, my husband and I welcomed the first of our two children, and I transitioned to a role as a stay-at-home mom.

In 2008, everything revolved around the stock market. I was an outsider, an educator, an arts person for-goodness-sake, but I wanted to understand what was happening and why. Around this time, I picked up the book, Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman. Kahneman is a psychologist, but he won the Nobel Prize in Economics by proposing that people make economic decisions based on very predictable, very illogical shortcuts rather than just supply and demand. I felt like someone turned on the lights.

After getting my second child to school, I went to graduate school, wrote my thesis by applying Kahneman’s theory to Shakespeare’s King Lear, then in 2015 made a complete career change. I am humbled and so thankful to be able to spend my days helping clients protect and grow their assets in this ever-changing marketplace.

My Favorite Part of the Job

My favorite part about my job is getting women involved in the financial decision-making process. Women are underrepresented in this industry, and I’m amazed by how many women I meet who feel finance is something only experts understand. I'm happiest when I'm able to dispel this myth, and welcome more diversity in the decision-making process.

When I’m Not Working

I love the wild ride that is raising two children in Grand Rapids. When I’m not driving kids to basketball, gymnastics, piano or soccer, I’m most likely lost in a good book, or listening to a podcast while walking our family’s beloved chihuahua-mut, Oliver.
